Summary

The present study examines the dual role of martial arts as a pragmatic system of self-defense and a structured vehicle for holistic personal development. Despite the global prevalence of combat sports practice, the integration of both functions within a single pedagogical framework remains underexplored, particularly in the Ukrainian academic context. Using a mixed-method approach that combines a systematic literature review with comparative analysis of training methodologies, the study identifies three interrelated training principles — technical progression, psychological conditioning, and philosophical-ethical grounding — that simultaneously enhance self-protection capacity and facilitate character formation. Technical progression encompasses the development of specialized motor skills, biomechanical efficiency, and the automation of protective responses. Psychological conditioning addresses self-regulation, stress resilience, concentration, and rapid decision-making under threat. The philosophical-ethical dimension cultivates discipline, responsibility, and a conscientious attitude toward force, thereby transforming physical capability into socially appropriate and controlled behaviour. Empirical evidence reviewed in this study indicates that scenario-based exercises and reflective psychological components significantly elevate the effectiveness of self-defense training beyond what is achieved through technical drilling alone. Furthermore, martial arts participation has been associated with measurable improvements in social adaptation, conflict resolution skills, and self-efficacy, particularly among youth and individuals in high-risk environments. The highest outcomes are documented precisely in programs that treat self-defense and personal development as co-equal and mutually reinforcing objectives rather than separate training goals. The study concludes with evidence-based recommendations for curriculum standardization within Ukrainian educational settings, the integration of psychological support into instructor certification programs, and the expansion of publicly accessible martial arts initiatives within social rehabilitation frameworks
