Summary

The article investigates the influence of the geometric parameters of a multi-span culvert structure on its hydraulic efficiency while simultaneously serving both hydraulic and transport functions. The study is based on design data for a culvert structure on the Inhulets River within the Hleiuvatka territorial community of the Dnipropetrovsk region. For the adopted structural design featuring six rectangular openings measuring 2.5 × 2.0 m, the total flow cross- sectional area and the hydraulic radius of an individual opening were determined. A parametric comparison was conducted for variants with varying numbers of identical culvert openings. The evaluation used the live cross-sectional area, wetted perimeter, hydraulic radius, and a relative discharge-capacity characteristic derived from the Manning equation. It was established that, given constant geometry for an individual opening, increasing the number of openings results in a virtually linear increase in both the total flow cross-sectional area and the theoretical discharge capacity. For the adopted six-span design, the cross-sectional area is 30 m², and the hydraulic radius of a single rectangular opening is 0.556 m. The study demonstrates that a multi-span configuration allows for increased discharge capacity without a proportional increase in the height of the transport embankment, a factor of particular importance when combining hydraulic and transport functions.
